Diabetic ketoacidosis in a prediabetic patient on ophthalmic steroids

A vignette from ACP Hospitalist's Brief Case section described an unusual case of diabetic ketoacidosis.

An ACP Hospitalist Brief Case published July 24 described a 29-year-old man with a history of hyperlipidemia, prediabetes, and childhood ocular trauma who presented with fatigue, polydipsia, and polyuria for two weeks. One month prior, he had undergone emergent surgery for spontaneous retinal detachment and since then had been using steroidal eye drops.

ACP Hospitalist is an online magazine exclusive to ACP members, and Brief Case is a feature in which readers submit vignettes from their real-life practice. Single sign-on is required to read most ACP Hospitalist articles.
