Hospitalists dip into DKA
Protocols using subcutaneous insulin have brought diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) into the domain of hospitalists.
A recent ACP Hospitalist article described how some hospitals are shifting from treating diabetic ketoacidosis with IV insulin in the ICU to using subcutaneous insulin, which can be done in various locations (the ED, observation or stepdown units, medical wards) by different types of clinicians, including hospitalists.
