ACP ONLINE QUICKLINKS: CLINICAL INFORMATION|PATIENTS & FAMILIES

Diabetes Portal Help

Updated: 10.8.2008

Overview

This site is organized into two main areas: (1) Patient Resources, which includes a variety of tools and publications designed specifically for patients and their families, and (2) Clinician Resources, which provides a rich and deep set of tools and content designed for those involved in the care of patients with diabetes.

Links within each section of each area (view related patient materials and view related clinician materials) allow visitors to move between related sections in each area.

An icon legend, showing the original source of each resource, appears in the right column of each page. The icon indicates that a resource is an interactive tool. Some of these have special technical requirements, though what you'll need is common and freely available.

Searching the Portal

Entering words separated by spaces will search for the exact phrase. Use commas, AND or OR to separate search words if you're not doing a phrase search.

Search terms and search operators (AND, OR, NEAR, etc.) are not case-sensitive.

The following tables list the primary search operators. Most operators have both a word and symbol that can be used interchangeably. Example: term1 AND term2 and term1 & term2 are equivalent. The first uses the word and the second uses the symbol for the "AND" operator.

WordSymbolDescription
AND&term1 AND term2 AND term3
Boolean AND
( )(term1 AND term2) NOT term3
Grouping characters
OR|term1 OR term2
Boolean OR
[ ][term1 AND term2] NOT term3
Grouping characters; terms inside brackets won't be expanded by fuzzy match operators (fuzzy, soundex, stem)
MINUS-term1 - term2
Documents containing term1 and term2 will be ranked lower than those containing term1alone
NEAR;NEAR((term1, term2, term3), max_span [, TRUE])
NEAR causes proximity of terms to be considered when scoring documents. max_span is a number indicating the largest chunk of words in which the terms should appear (default is 100). The optional third argument when set to TRUE indicates that terms must appear in the same order within the document as they appear in the query
NOT~term1 NOT term2
Boolean NOT
Fuzzy Match and Wildcard Operators
??term1
Fuzzy match operator. Expands term to words with similar spellings. ?apply might expand to apply apple applied April
$$term1
Stem operator. Expands term to words that have the same root. $sing would be expanded to sing sang sung
%term%
Wildcard (multiple characters)
_term_
Wildcard (single character)

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a member of ACP to access the portal?
No, the ACP Diabetes Portal is open access--public to everyone. While there are some resources in the portal that require either ACP membership or subscription in order to access the full text, all content is provided in abstracted form within the portal.

How often is the content updated?
The content inside the Patient Resources and Clinician Resources areas of the portal will be updated weekly, as new resources are produced (such as new articles in Annals) or existing resources are updated (such as sections of PIER). New Weekly Feature polls will also be posted each week. The news feeds are updated in real time as the sources (not ACP) update their articles and headlines.

How do I order other free products from the Diabetes Initiative through the portal?
Go to the Clinician Resources home. From this page, scroll down and you will see links to order each of the currently available products. All are free to ACP members and the ACP Diabetes Care Guide is free to all.

How do I find out the source of the content?
Each resource within the portal is identified with an icon. Each icon indicates a specific source and all are listed in the Legend section of the right-hand column. Move your mouse over the icons in this Legend for more information about each (and links to even more information).

How does the search engine work?
The search engine allows targeted searches of clinician and/or patient resources and returns all of the information available within the portal pages, but filtered according to your search. In general, the best results will be obtained by limiting searches to single words, e.g., insulin, or short phrases, e.g., blood sugar. If you want to perform more sophisticated searches (including fuzzy searches and Boolean searches), you may consult the search section of the help.

Errata—ACP Diabetes Care Guide

1. Gestational Diabetes (correction). Page 30, left column, in the paragraph with the heading "high risk," lines 4 and 5, and again in the paragraph with the heading "average risk," line 4: "...24 to 48 weeks' gestation" should be "...24 to 28 weeks' gestation."

2. Insulin Regimens for Type 2 Diabetes (clarification). Page 57, Table 8-1. Currently Available Insulin Preparations. Because of inherent variability in the effects of insulin on individual patients, Table 8-1 has been revised to list pharmacodynamic characteristics by insulin type, rather than by specific preparation. Open the revised Table 8-1

3. Helping Your Patients Lose Weight (correction). Page 75, left column, first bulleted item, second sentence: "...about 25% of daily caloric intake" should be "...about 40% of daily caloric intake."
